Explore, Experience, Enjoy Rhodes

The island of Rhodes is a place where history, nature, and local charm come together to offer unforgettable experiences. From ancient ruins and medieval towns to golden beaches and scenic villages, Rhodes invites you to discover its many layers — whether you’re a culture lover, beach explorer, or nature enthusiast.

The Medieval City of Rhodes

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe, the Old Town of Rhodes is a must-visit for every traveler. Enclosed within massive stone walls, the city’s heart is a maze of cobbled alleys, hidden courtyards, vibrant squares, and buildings with Byzantine, Ottoman, and Gothic influences.

Walk along the majestic Avenue of the Knights, home to the former inns of the Crusaders, and visit the Palace of the Grand Master — a medieval fortress turned museum. The Old Town is divided into two main parts: the Knights’ Quarter, once reserved for the Order of St. John, and the Hora, where merchants and locals lived.

Don’t miss the beautifully restored Mosque of Suleyman, a pink-domed Ottoman landmark, or the nearby Acropolis of Rhodes, with its impressive Temple of Apollo and ancient stadium. By day or night, Rhodes Old Town promises an experience like no other — a place where every corner tells a story.

Lindos

Lindos is often considered the most breathtaking archaeological site on the island. Perched on a high rock above the sea, the Acropolis of Lindos offers sweeping views and ancient ruins, including the Temple of Athena Lindia, dating back to the 4th century BC.

The village below is equally charming — a postcard-perfect maze of whitewashed alleyways, rooftop restaurants, boutique shops, and hidden chapels. Lindos is fully pedestrianized, adding to its magical atmosphere. Visitors can even hop on a traditional donkey ride to reach the top of the hill.

Arrive early in the day to enjoy the peaceful setting before the crowds arrive.

Hidden Beaches & Coastal Escapes

Beyond the island’s popular resorts, Rhodes is filled with hidden coastal gems. The beaches between Gennadi and Plimmyri, stretching across 11 km, offer uninterrupted shorelines, soft sand, and crystal-clear waters — perfect for those seeking a peaceful day by the sea.

On the southern tip of the island, you’ll find Prasonisi (Green Island) — a true paradise for windsurfing and kitesurfing. With two seas meeting at one point, it creates ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced riders.

Meanwhile, beaches like Anthony Quinn Bay, Haraki, and Agathi offer turquoise waters framed by rocky cliffs and shallow coves ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Monolithos Village & Castle

Located on the wild western coast of Rhodes, Monolithos is a quiet, amphitheatrical village built on a slope overlooking the sea. Its highlight is the medieval castle, dramatically perched on a giant rock — from which the village gets its name (“mono-lithos” meaning “single rock”).

The castle ruins, surrounded by pine trees, offer panoramic views of the coastline and the Aegean horizon. It’s an ideal spot for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking moments of solitude in a landscape that feels untouched by time.

Valley of the Butterflies

Just a few kilometers from Theologos village, the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) is one of the most unique nature reserves on the island. Shaded by lush trees and cooled by flowing streams, this tranquil area becomes home to thousands of butterflies each summer — specifically, the Panaxia Quadripunctaria species.

During July and August, the valley comes alive with delicate movement and soft rustling as the butterflies rest on the trees to conserve energy for reproduction. Please tread gently and avoid disturbing them to help preserve this magical natural cycle for future generations.

Scenic Drives & Mountain Villages

Rhodes isn’t just about the coast — its interior is a treasure trove of lush forests, historic monasteries, and traditional mountain villages.

A drive through the north-central highlands, especially around Mt Profitis Ilias, offers spectacular views, clean air, and a peaceful contrast to the busier seaside areas.

Make a stop at Salakos, a beautiful village surrounded by olive groves, or explore the Monastery of Thari, one of the island’s most spiritual and ancient places, nestled deep in nature.
